Note #17: Bristol arrival

November 08, 2026
  • I now live in Bristol. Our kiwi movers unloaded two lorry loads of my London life into our new house on Thursday, and we collected the remaining remnants of Rina’s past Bristol life from a storage container on Friday. Two more full days of deep cleaning and unpacking, and it almost feels like a home already.
  • This is all very discombobulating. One of the main reasons I loved living in London was how experienced at it I was. I like being competent, and I was a proudly competent Londoner. Right now I am the least competent Bristolian I will ever be. I’ve already done parking and the bins wrong.
  • We’re at the bottom of a years long hill-climb to get this house to how we want it. There will be dust.
  • The cats are as discombobulated as I am.
  • Immediately enjoying the high quality local independent businesses of Bristol. Bike Shack Leyton were very good, but TLD Cycles is even better based on one very efficient but exceptionally friendly puncture repair visit.
  • I’m making heavy use of my Hermes Agent to manage a lot of the moving admin. I just used it to register with my new GP, in what I’m treating as self-experimentation. I’m telling you now because if I am administratively dead next week, you’ll know why.
  • There were about 48 hours where I was unable to make my own cup of tea. I am now able to make one again. More importantly, Rina is able to make me one. I am feeling more grounded already.
